IBM Storage in the OpenShift context
IBM owns Red Hat, and IBM Storage Fusion is IBM’s answer to the question of what storage to use on OpenShift. For teams already inside the IBM ecosystem — running IBM FlashSystem, IBM Cloud Pak for Data, or IBM infrastructure broadly — Storage Fusion is a natural recommendation. For teams that want to evaluate independently, the picture looks different.
IBM Storage Fusion brings IBM Spectrum Scale (GPFS) into OpenShift. That is a powerful parallel file system with a 30-year history in HPC environments. It is also a complex system to operate, and it adds IBM licensing cost on top of an already-expensive OpenShift subscription.
When IBM Storage Fusion is worth evaluating — and when it is not
IBM Storage Fusion makes the most sense for teams with existing Spectrum Scale expertise, existing IBM infrastructure, and workloads with high sequential throughput requirements (HPC, large data lakes, media rendering pipelines). In those cases, the Spectrum Scale performance characteristics are well-matched.
For general OpenShift workloads — databases, stateful Kubernetes services, container applications, KubeVirt virtualization — the parallel file system overhead of Spectrum Scale does not add value. The operational complexity it brings is not justified by the workload requirements.
